On the Isle of Palms there are specific regulations regarding dogs to ensure both safety and enjoyment for all beach-goers and residents. Please have a look below before walking your dog on IOP.
- General Beach Rules:
- From September 15 to March 31, dogs can be off-leash on the beach from 4 PM to 10 AM.
- From April 1 to September 14, dogs are allowed off-leash from 5 AM to 9 AM.
- Outside of these hours, dogs must be on a leash at all times on the beach.

- Dog Licensing and Rabies Vaccination:
- All dogs residing on the Isle of Palms must have a current city dog license, which can be obtained from the Isle of Palms Police Department. Proof of a current rabies vaccination is required to obtain the license.
- There is no fee for the dog license, and it should be renewed annually by April 1 (City of Isle of Palms, SC).
- Animal Control:
- The Isle of Palms Animal Control ensures public safety concerning animals. This includes responding to animal bites, controlling stray animals, and promoting rabies vaccinations and spaying/neutering programs.
- The city hosts an annual “Doggie Day at the Rec” event where residents can get rabies vaccinations and city dog licenses for their pets (City of Isle of Palms, SC).
